Project Management

Project management is often required in large projects, to coordinate the development and design of a system. Projects require financing in some form or fashion, time lines need to be estimated and work assigned to maximise the potential return of any project. IT Projects often run into unforeseen problems, and these to be navigated and all concerned parties informed and coordinated with. Project Management is generally responsible for all the areas of a technical project that fall outside the remit of Software Architecture, Software Engineering and Development, whilst also facilitating all those roles. Project Management is very much the art of juggling and balancing a project through to success.

Very few projects exist in isolation, and most IT systems, form a central point of contact, either internally for members in a business, or externally with suppliers or clients. As such there are many actors and stake holders in a system, beyond just the developers, and each actor generally has an expectation from a system. Good project management goes beyond just the creation, into managing expectation of the different actors in the system and ensuring their good ideas and needs are incorporated into the system. The adage no Project is an Island is a useful one to remember as systems are built.
