Penetration Testing is the art of authorised access of computer systems via non obvious means to test the security of systems and reduce the risk of non authorised access. Penetration Testing must be done with the full consent of a party authorised to allow such style of access.

Penetration testing can be very useful in increasing the security of systems, and in seeing how an organisation copes with a breach that should be benign in nature, before a real breach of security is done with malicious intentionality.

System hardening is generally the first stage of securing systems, penetration testing inside of a lab scenario is far less disruptive but can only go so far in determining how an organisation actually responds to a penetration. Once the penetration testing is done, then system hardening and possibly security policy should be tuned such that in future similar attacks to the penetration testing are contained or neutralised.
