Encryption

Encryption is the process of securing information by transforming information into cipher text. Cipher text is generally illegible text that makes no sense to the casual observer or in many cases the determined observer, and by the application of a hidden key the cipher text can be transformed back into clear text (information).

The transformation process in most modern ciphers involves the use of a function where the inverse function is very hard to calculate. The keys used to encrypt and decrypt alter a base function so that without the key access to the original information (clear text) from the cipher text is at best a laborious task.
