![]() Database development has been a requirement for most IT Projects, ever since the beginning of IT Projects. Data is an element in most IT (Information Technology) Systems, the ability to store (memorise), perform operations on and the store the calculated results of those operations as further data is something that is true of every program, a program itself is a form of data. Most business pre computing times were well aware of the value of information, and most businesses would keep paper records and tallies of the business they had done, and the contacts they had. There would be ad hoc rules used to identify transactions, people and stock, and today databases use a similar model, databases when it come to business are often modelling their paper based counterparts. Databases on computer systems can be made multiuser and allow real time data entry and data inspection. With the Internet data can also be made available to anywhere in the world with a Net connection. Not all databases are multiuser but the vast majority of business databases are. Database TypesDatabases or datastores, come in a variety of different types, the simplest database is perhaps the flat file database, which is normally text based, single user when read directly (normally a file lock is applied) and actually quite high performing. XML files are primarily a flat file database in storage, but in operation the XML files normally get converted to a document object model for processing. Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) is what most people think of as a database today. RDBMS is a set based relational model of data, where data is stored in tables as records, and the columns between tables are then related. Relational databases are quite flexible in operation, and the implementations are heavily designed to give as good performance as they can inside of multi user and security concerns. Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP)... Database DesignCare should be given when designing databases, as alteration of the database late on in the development life cycle can cause quite large ripple effects through a system, it is often prudent to create and Application Programming Interface over the database that agrees to minimal or no change. Often a legacy database is already in position, in these instances a data migration path needs to be identified along with all applications that are using that database and the interface currently provided by the database. Legacy database tend to have been created fairly ad hoc, and often without rigour, so it is a good time to really produce a strong database design and find out the problems experienced with the legacy database. In some instances the legacy database has been created as a work of art, and the underlying technology has just become obsolete, so there are benefits from understanding the legacy database, no matter it is current state of being.
